Our History
Our History
2nd Stage Community Theater was founded in 2010 with a simple but powerful vision: to create a place where young people could discover their talents, build confidence, and experience the magic of live theater.
Founded by educator, director, and youth advocate Timothy Mathews, 2nd Stage began as a small children's theater program serving families throughout the Tampa Bay area. What started as a passion project quickly grew into a thriving community of young performers, dedicated families, and talented volunteers.
Over the course of a decade, 2nd Stage produced numerous theatrical productions, educational programs, camps, and performance opportunities that impacted hundreds of young people. More than just learning lines and songs, students developed confidence, teamwork, communication skills, leadership abilities, and lifelong friendships.
Like many arts organizations, 2nd Stage faced challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic and entered a period of transition. While the stage lights dimmed for a season, the vision never disappeared.
Today, 2nd Stage is entering an exciting new chapter as 2nd Stage Community Theater. Building on a legacy of creativity, education, and excellence, the organization is being reimagined as a youth-focused community theater dedicated to serving the next generation of performers and leaders.
As we look to the future, our commitment remains unchanged: to provide affordable, high-quality performing arts experiences that inspire young people to dream bigger, believe in themselves, and discover their unique voice.

Timeline
2010 – 2nd Stage is founded in the Tampa Bay area.
2010–2020 – Produces youth theater programs, camps, workshops, and live performances.
2020 – Operations pause during a period of transition following the pandemic.
2026 – Relaunches as 2nd Stage Community Theater with a renewed focus on youth development, arts education, and community engagement.
Today – Building a new generation of confident, creative, and compassionate young leaders through the performing arts.
